Our Curriculum
At Dhoon School, our curriculum is shaped by our core values of Belonging, Happiness and Ambition. These principles sit at the heart of every learning experience, ensuring that children feel part of a caring community, find joy in their learning, and strive to achieve their very best. Rooted in a carefully sequenced and locally rich curriculum, our provision offers meaningful, connected and engaging learning experiences that meet the needs of every child.
We believe children learn most effectively when they feel secure, inspired and able to make sense of the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills progressively, giving pupils the confidence to build on prior learning and explore new ideas with curiosity and enthusiasm. By integrating subjects through purposeful themes, and embedding strong links to our Manx heritage and environment, we help pupils understand the relevance of what they learn and provide opportunities for them to express themselves and discover their individual talents.
Our teaching approach encourages children to think critically, act kindly, collaborate with others, and take ownership of their learning. Through well-planned topics, outdoor learning, and adaptive teaching strategies, pupils develop independence, confidence and the resilience to overcome challenges.
The Impact of Our Curriculum
The impact of the Dhoon curriculum is reflected in the confident, caring and motivated learners who thrive in our school. Our pupils feel safe, valued and proud to be part of a community where they belong. They engage positively in lessons, talk confidently about their learning, and demonstrate the positive attitudes and skills needed both now and in later life.
Because our curriculum is coherent, inclusive and responsive, it ensures that all pupils make strong, continuous progress. Learning is clearly visible in classrooms and books, with high standards achieved across subjects. Children are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, understand their next steps, and celebrate their successes in many forms.
Alongside our academic curriculum, pupils benefit from a rich, progressive outdoors curriculum (Forest School), which gives them purposeful opportunities to explore nature, develop practical skills and build self-confidence. Outdoor learning enhances wellbeing, nurtures teamwork, and deepens pupils’ connection to the natural and cultural heritage that surrounds them.
We also prioritise personal development through a planned curriculum that helps pupils understand the importance of positive relationships, wellbeing and emotional literacy. Children learn about themselves, others, and the wider world, growing in empathy, tolerance and social understanding.
Together, these elements create a curriculum that nurtures happy, ambitious and compassionate learners - children who recognise their place in the local and global community, understand the impact of their actions, and are ready to embrace future challenges with confidence and positivity.
